Incredible Story of When the Unimaginable Became Possible

Written by Maitreyi Bhuyan

"We live in a society exquisitely dependent on science and technology, in which hardly anyone knows anything about science and technology."

~Carl Sagan

From the discoveries of Galileo and Kepler about the solar system to Newton, standing on the shoulders of these great people, to the discovery of gravity. From Edison discovering tube light, to him, creating a business out of it. Whether we want to accept it or not, we can't deny that we are breathing the fragrance of science all around us. From using two stones to light a fire, to using a lighter. Using mercury to measure temperature, using a digital thermometer. Using our legs to travel from one place to another, to using carts, motorcycles, cars, ships, and even planes to acquire the whole world. From sending dog Laika to space, to William Shatner, a celebrity who crossed the international border to enter space. It's Science and technology, which is allowing us to achieve great heights.

Earlier, talking on cabled phones was just an imagination, now the telecom industry has expanded so much and that's a reality. Earlier, computers used to acquire a whole room and create a lot of issues, now potable and efficient computers with incredible designs, which can understand high-level programming languages, are lying just beside you. Earlier, people used to treat headaches by applying vinegar and opium solution, to open the pores, now better medicines have resulted in more sensible treatment. Earlier, students used to sit and learn beneath a big tree, now online platforms have connected them in a better manner. Nothing would have been possible, without science and unique thoughts.

Science is an abyss of knowledge, the more you think, the better you become. And it is something governed wholly by reason, neither by whim nor by intuitions. Its reason, which had the power to dictate. There are many, who were and are still skeptical about science, no wonder, the Wright brothers were thought to be crooked before airplanes took flight. But our scientists and inventors continued exploring and giving us discoveries to enjoy, either by tasting or by observing, it was their curiosity which has led to these discoveries.

Was it always good? Maybe not, science and technology have had their shortcomings, people are still debating whether a mobile phone is a boon or bane, excess of excitement regarding the internet in 2001 led to repression, popularly known as the dot-com bubble, and many jobs were found to be hollow. The discoveries were not always correct, take the example of atoms, many scientists gave different theories, and finally when we started to believe in electrons, protons, and neutrons; we are being introduced to Higgs Boson and string theory.

Even today, when the discovery of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and augmented reality can be the next best thing, it is also stirring great uncertainty among people, who are concerned if it will take away their jobs and opportunities, will depreciate creativity take over humankind. Being apprehensive is justified but not accepting changes, not being optimistic about the future, and sticking to the past, is not. We should not forget that, every discovery brings with it something to learn, if used in a regulated way, it will not only make our lives easy by reducing monotonous tasks but also help us in health, education, and other aspects of life.

Lastly, let us face the future with open arms and positive thoughts. Let's remember that science, when combined with humans can lead to unimaginable results.
